Who Needs a Vietnam eVisa — and Who Does Not

Most nationalities require a Vietnam eVisa for every visit in 2026. There is no visa on arrival and no visa-free arrangement for US, Australian, Canadian, or most other passport holders. Vietnamese immigration requires an approved eVisa before check-in — airlines deny boarding without one.

The most important exception: British and UK passport holders are visa-exempt for stays up to 45 days and do not need to apply for an eVisa. They arrive at a Vietnamese airport and receive entry without any prior application or fee. This exemption applies to British citizens on a British passport only.

For all nationalities that do need an eVisa, the application is submitted on evisa.gov.vn (the official Vietnamese government portal) or through a licensed agency such as VietnamVisaEasy. The government fee is USD 25 for single entry or USD 50 for multiple entry. Both 30-day and 90-day validity options cost the same — always choose 90 days, as there is no financial reason to choose 30.

Requirement 1 — Passport Validity and Condition

Two passport conditions must be met before applying. Both are enforced by airlines at check-in and by Vietnamese immigration on arrival.

Validity: 6 months beyond arrival If your flight lands in Vietnam on 1 September 2026, your passport must be valid until at least 1 March 2027. A passport expiring in 4 months is not sufficient. Airlines will deny boarding regardless of eVisa status if passport validity is below 6 months.
Blank pages: at least 2 Vietnamese immigration stamps entry and exit. Two blank pages are required. A passport full of stamps may be refused at the border even with a valid eVisa. Count your blank pages before applying.
US 12-page emergency passport US emergency passports (12 pages) may not be accepted. Use a standard 28 or 52-page US passport if possible. Contact WhatsApp +84 947 754 252 to confirm before applying with an emergency passport.

Renew your passport before applying for the eVisa if validity is close. A passport issue discovered at the airport cannot be resolved at the counter.

Requirement 2 — Passport Photo: JPEG, Not HEIC

The photo requirement is the most common cause of silent application delays. Vietnamese immigration requires JPEG format and will silently flag a non-compliant photo as Amendment Required — no email is sent, no notification is given, and the application stops processing until the error is corrected.

Format JPEG / JPG only. No HEIC, PNG, TIFF, or WebP. Vietnam eVisa system rejects all non-JPEG formats silently.
Background White background only. No cream, off-white, or coloured backgrounds. Grey walls or outdoor photos are rejected.
Size 4x6cm (standard passport photo size). Face must fill the frame from chin to crown. No cropping that cuts off the top of the head.
Glasses No glasses. Even clear lenses can cause rejection. Remove glasses for the photo.
Recency Taken within the last 6 months. Clear, no blur, no glare on face. Neutral expression, eyes open and looking straight at the camera.

iPhone HEIC problem — this affects more US and Australian applicants than any other single issue. iPhones default to HEIC format. Fix before taking the photo:

Option A (recommended) Take the photo directly through WhatsApp camera. WhatsApp auto-saves as JPEG. Fastest fix with no settings change needed.
Option B Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Then take the photo. This changes iPhone default to JPEG for all future photos.

Requirement 3 — Passport Scan: The Correct Page and Format

The passport scan must be of the photo/bio-data page — the page with your photo, name, date of birth, passport number, and the MRZ (machine-readable zone) — the two rows of letters and numbers at the bottom of the page.

Which page Photo/bio-data page only. Not the visa pages. Not the signature page. The page with your photo and the MRZ lines at the bottom.
MRZ must be visible Both MRZ lines must be fully visible and readable. Do not crop the bottom of the page. This is how Vietnamese immigration verifies your name and passport number.
Quality Clear, no glare, not blurry. Entire page visible, no cut edges. Flat on a surface — do not hold the passport open and photograph it at an angle.
Format JPEG preferred. File size under 2MB. Most phone camera photos meet this requirement directly.

Requirement 4 — Entry Port: Vietnamese Airport, Never Transit Hub

Entry port is the field that causes the most Amendment Required cases after the HEIC photo issue. The entry port must be the IATA code for the Vietnamese airport where your plane physically lands — not the transit hub where you connect.

Vietnamese immigration does not see you at Singapore Changi or Seoul Incheon. They see you when you land at Tan Son Nhat (SGN), Noi Bai (HAN), Da Nang (DAD), or another Vietnamese airport. That code is your entry port.

Route (examples) Wrong Correct Vietnamese airport
JFK / LAX / SYD / MEL via Singapore → HCMC SIN SGN Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat)
JFK / LAX / SYD via Seoul → Hanoi ICN HAN Hanoi (Noi Bai)
ORD / SFO / SYD via Tokyo → HCMC NRT SGN Ho Chi Minh City (Tan Son Nhat)
Any route via any transit → Da Nang SIN / ICN DAD Da Nang International
Any route → Phu Quoc SGN / SIN PQC Phu Quoc International
Any route → Nha Trang SGN CXR Cam Ranh (Nha Trang)

Rule: find the "Arrives" line on your booking confirmation for the Vietnam-landing segment. That airport code is your entry port. Never use the transit hub.

Requirement 5 — Name: Full Legal Name Matching Passport MRZ

The name on the eVisa must match the name in the MRZ (machine-readable zone) of the passport exactly. The MRZ is the two lines of characters at the bottom of the passport photo page. It contains the full legal name including all middle names, without abbreviations.

A common error for US applicants: entering "John Smith" when the passport MRZ reads "JOHN MICHAEL SMITH". The missing middle name causes a mismatch that can result in Amendment Required, denial at check-in, or denial at Vietnamese immigration on arrival. Before submitting, check the MRZ on your passport and enter exactly what it shows.

Requirement 6 — Entry Date: Vietnam Arrival, Not US Departure

The entry date on the eVisa must be the calendar date when your plane lands in Vietnam — in DD/MM/YYYY format. This is not the date you depart from your home country and not the date you transit through Singapore or Seoul.

US travelers are most affected by this because US-to-Vietnam flights cross the International Date Line, typically adding one to two calendar days. A traveler departing Los Angeles Friday evening arrives in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday morning Vietnam time. The entry date on the eVisa must be Sunday. Entering Friday or Saturday makes the eVisa technically invalid on the actual arrival day. Always check the "Arrives" column on the Vietnam-landing segment of your booking confirmation.

Complete Pre-Application Checklist

Item Requirement Common mistake
Passport validity Valid 6+ months beyond Vietnam arrival date Passport expiring within 6 months — denied at check-in
Blank pages At least 2 blank pages Full passport — refused at border
Photo format JPEG, white background, 4x6cm, no glasses iPhone HEIC — silent Amendment Required
Passport scan Bio-data page, MRZ visible, no glare, JPEG Cropped MRZ — rejection or mismatch
Full name Exactly as in passport MRZ including all middle names Missing middle name — Amendment Required or entry denial
Entry port Vietnamese airport code (SGN/HAN/DAD/PQC/CXR) Transit hub SIN or ICN — invalid eVisa, denied boarding
Entry date Vietnam arrival date DD/MM/YYYY US departure date — eVisa invalid on actual arrival day
Validity Choose 90 days — same price as 30 days Choosing 30 days unnecessarily restricts flexibility
Entry type Single (USD 25) or multiple (USD 50). Multiple if crossing into Cambodia/Laos and returning Single entry with Vietnam–Cambodia border crossing — blocked re-entry

VietnamVisaEasy checks all items above before submission. Photo and passport scan verified before reaching immigration — the most common error causes are caught at this stage.

Government Portal vs Agency: What Is the Difference

The eVisa can be applied for directly on evisa.gov.vn at the government fee of USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry. Standard processing is 3 to 5 Vietnamese business days. The government system sends no proactive notifications if an error is found — Amendment Required is visible only if you actively check the status on the portal.

Agency-assisted processing through VietnamVisaEasy starts at USD 90 all-inclusive and includes: document review before submission (catching photo and passport scan errors), entry port verification, name format check, and 24/7 WhatsApp support if the application stalls. For urgent applications — 3-Day USD 90 to 1-Hour USD 185 — VietnamVisaEasy monitors the application through approval and can escalate immediately if issues arise.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements for a Vietnam eVisa?
Five requirements: (1) Passport valid 6+ months beyond Vietnam arrival, 2 blank pages. (2) JPEG photo — white background, 4x6cm, no glasses. Not HEIC from iPhone. (3) Vietnam arrival date DD/MM/YYYY — not US departure date. (4) Entry port = Vietnamese airport code (SGN/HAN/DAD) — never SIN or ICN. (5) Full legal name matching passport MRZ including all middle names. Government fee: USD 25 single, USD 50 multiple. Both 30-day and 90-day same price — choose 90 days.
Do UK or British citizens need a Vietnam eVisa?
No. British passport holders are visa-exempt for Vietnam for stays up to 45 days. No eVisa application and no government fee required. Arrive at a Vietnamese airport and receive entry. This applies to British citizens on a British passport — not other nationalities residing in the UK.
Why is HEIC photo format a problem for Vietnam eVisa?
Vietnam eVisa accepts JPEG only. iPhone default is HEIC. When HEIC is submitted, immigration flags Amendment Required with no email notification — the application stops processing and the clock resets to Day 1 from correction. Fix: take photo through WhatsApp camera (auto-JPEG), or Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible before taking the photo.
What entry port should I put on the Vietnam eVisa?
Entry port = IATA code of Vietnamese airport where your plane lands. Via Singapore to HCMC: SGN. Via Seoul to Hanoi: HAN. Via Singapore to Da Nang: DAD. Via any transit to Phu Quoc: PQC. Via any transit to Nha Trang: CXR. Never SIN, ICN, NRT, or DXB. Find it on the "Arrives" line of your Vietnam-landing flight segment.
Is 30-day or 90-day Vietnam eVisa better?
Both cost exactly the same: USD 25 single entry or USD 50 multiple entry. Always choose 90 days. There is no financial reason to choose 30 days. 90-day validity gives more flexibility if plans change or extend, and avoids having to apply again for a return trip.
When should I enter my Vietnam entry date if flying via Singapore?
Enter the date your plane lands in Vietnam in DD/MM/YYYY format — not your US departure date and not the Singapore transit date. US flights cross the International Date Line, often adding one to two calendar days. Departing LA Friday evening typically lands in HCMC Sunday morning. Entry date: Sunday. Check the "Arrives" column for the Vietnam segment in your booking confirmation.
Do I need single or multiple entry Vietnam eVisa?
Single entry (USD 25) if traveling to Vietnam only, with no border crossing into neighboring countries and returning. Multiple entry (USD 50) if your itinerary includes leaving Vietnam and re-entering — for example Vietnam–Cambodia–Vietnam or Vietnam–Laos–Vietnam. Cannot be changed after approval: specify the correct type at application.
