Direct answer
The Vietnam eVisa cannot be extended from inside Vietnam. No in-country extension procedure exists for any eVisa category in 2026. To stay longer, you must exit Vietnam and apply for a new eVisa online.
Overstaying: USD 25–500 fine. 16+ days overstay = deportation risk under Decree 59/2026. UK/EU 45-day visa-exempt stays also cannot be extended — exit required.
Fastest exit options: Bangkok (1h flight), Singapore (2h), Phnom Penh (bus or 1h flight). Apply new eVisa before leaving Vietnam so it is ready on re-entry. Apply new eVisa — from USD 90

Why the Vietnam eVisa Cannot Be Extended
The Vietnam eVisa is issued as a fixed-validity electronic entry permit by the Vietnam Immigration Department. Unlike some other Southeast Asian countries where tourist visas can be renewed at an immigration office, Vietnam's eVisa system does not have an in-country extension procedure for any eVisa category — tourist, business, or family visit.
The 90-day validity is the maximum single stay allowed on one eVisa — it is not a renewable window. Once the eVisa expiry date arrives, continued presence in Vietnam is illegal regardless of whether the eVisa was a 30-day or 90-day version.
Common misconception: "I have a 90-day eVisa so I can extend it to stay longer"
The 90 days is the stay duration on this eVisa — not a renewable period. When 90 days are up, the eVisa is finished. The only legal path to continued presence in Vietnam is a new entry on a new visa or exemption.
Three Legal Options When Your eVisa Is About to Expire
Overstay Penalties in 2026
Decree 59/2026 which took effect on April 1, 2026 strengthened overstay enforcement. The penalties apply from the first day after the eVisa expiry date, including weekends and public holidays.
| Overstay duration | Fine | Additional consequences |
|---|---|---|
| 1–5 days | USD 25–150 | Written warning, noted on immigration record |
| 6–15 days | USD 150–300 | Immigration record mark, possible future visa difficulty |
| 16+ days | USD 300–500 | Deportation risk. Multi-year re-entry ban possible. Blacklisted by Vietnam Immigration Department. |
Do not overstay even by one day
The expiry date on the eVisa PDF is the last day of permitted stay — not the last day to exit. If the eVisa shows 04/09/2026, you must exit on or before September 4, 2026. Departure after midnight on September 4 counts as overstay. Begin planning at least 7 days before the expiry date.
UK, EU, and Visa-Exempt Travelers: Same Rule Applies
UK passport holders (45 days visa-exempt), EU citizens (45 days), Japanese, Korean, and other visa-exempt nationalities are subject to the same no-extension rule. The 45-day exemption period cannot be extended at an immigration office.
| UK / EU 45-day exemption | Cannot be extended. To stay beyond 45 days: apply for a 90-day eVisa (USD 25 single / USD 50 multiple) before the exemption expires. Agency processing from USD 90 via VietnamVisaEasy. |
| ASEAN 30-day exemption | Cannot be extended. Exit Vietnam and re-enter on a new 30-day exemption, or apply for a multiple-entry eVisa. |
| Japan / South Korea 45-day exemption | Cannot be extended. Same options as UK/EU above. |
| Phu Quoc Island 30-day exemption | Separate rule. Only valid within Phu Quoc island. Leaving to mainland Vietnam requires a separate visa or eVisa. |
Visa-exempt travelers who need a 90-day eVisa before their 45-day exemption expires: apply via VietnamVisaEasy. 3-Day agency processing from USD 90. Enter the Vietnam arrival date from your flight confirmation as the eVisa entry date.
How to Apply for a New eVisa Before Your Visa Run
| 1 | Apply while in Vietnam | Submit new eVisa application at evisa.gov.vn or via VietnamVisaEasy from your hotel or accommodation in Vietnam. No need to exit first. |
| 2 | Set correct entry date | Entry date = planned re-entry date into Vietnam after visa run. Example: leaving Vietnam Aug 20, returning Aug 22 → entry date Aug 22. |
| 3 | Choose 90-day validity | 30-day and 90-day same price (USD 25 single / USD 50 multiple). Always choose 90 days for maximum flexibility. |
| 4 | Wait for approval | Standard 3–5 Vietnamese business days. Agency 1-Day from USD 85 Speed Up if short on time. Download PDF and save offline. |
| 5 | Exit and re-enter | Exit Vietnam before current eVisa expires. Re-enter on the new approved eVisa PDF. Present at Vietnamese immigration on return. |
