Urgent Vietnam Visa for Australians (2026)

By VietnamVisaEasy Visa Team · 2026-05-19 · Updated 2026-11-08

Urgent Vietnam Visa from Australia: illustrated cover with australia → vietnam and vietnam is behind you

An urgent Vietnam visa from Australia is easier to time than in most countries. Vietnam is only 1 to 4 hours behind Australian clocks, so the offices that approve e-visas are open during your working day. This guide explains the fastest options, converts every cutoff to Australian time, and lists the mistakes that most often slow down an urgent application from Australia.

Do Australians need an urgent Vietnam visa?

Australians need a visa for every trip, urgent or not. Australia is not on Vietnam's visa exemption list. The one exception is a trip that lands on Phu Quoc and stays only on the island, explained in our Phu Quoc visa-free guide.

For everything else, the e-visa is the usual choice. It is valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, and arrives as a PDF. "Urgent" simply means a faster handling time. The general guide for Australian travelers is Vietnam visa for Australians.

How fast is an urgent Vietnam visa from Australia?

As fast as 30–60 minutes on a Vietnamese working day. Vietnam's Immigration Department works Monday to Friday, 08:00–11:30 and 13:30–18:30 Vietnam time (GMT+7).

Prices for each speed are in our Vietnam visa cost guide.

What are the cutoffs in Australian time?

The Vietnamese working day is your afternoon and evening. Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart use AEST (Vietnam + 3 hours) in winter and AEDT (Vietnam + 4 hours) from October to April. Brisbane stays on AEST all year. Perth uses AWST, only 1 hour ahead of Vietnam.

Adelaide and Darwin are 30 minutes behind Sydney and Brisbane respectively.

What do you need before you start?

Two clear image files and your trip details. Having them ready before the cutoff is what makes a same-day result possible.

  • A photo of your passport data page, flat, in daylight, with both machine-readable lines visible.
  • A recent portrait photo on a plain white background, without glasses, saved as JPG and under 2 MB.
  • An Australian passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date, with a blank page.
  • Your arrival date in Vietnam, the Vietnamese arrival airport and your first hotel address.
  • Your choice of single or multiple entry. Choose multiple entry if you will visit Cambodia, Laos or Thailand and come back.

Ask for 90 days rather than 30 if your plans may change. The government fee is the same, and a longer validity costs nothing extra. Australian dual citizens should apply with the passport they will actually carry, because the e-visa is tied to that passport number.

Which speed should you choose?

Choose the slowest speed that still arrives before check-in.

  • Flight in 5 or more days: a 3- or 4-working-day speed is enough.
  • Flight tomorrow: submit before 14:00 in Sydney (winter) for the 1-day speed.
  • Flight tonight: use 5 hours, 2.5 hours or 1.5 hours while the cutoff is still open.
  • At the airport during Vietnamese office hours: the 30–60 minute speed.
  • Saturday, Sunday or a public holiday: the weekend and holiday service before 15:00 Vietnam time.

Which mistakes slow down Australian applications?

Route and date errors are the most common. Many Australian trips connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok, and that causes 3 typical problems:

  1. Transit city as entry port. Choose the Vietnamese airport where you land, not the connecting hub.
  2. Wrong arrival date. Overnight flights from Australia often land the day after departure. Use the landing date.
  3. Middle names left out. Enter the full name exactly as in the passport's machine-readable lines.

Photo problems come next: glasses, shadows, or iPhone HEIC files that will not upload. Our list of common e-visa mistakes covers each one.

What if you already applied and it is still processing?

Speed up the existing file instead of applying again. A second application means a second government fee and two records for one passport. Send your application code, the email used on the application and your flight details. Our guide on how to speed up an existing Vietnam e-visa explains the process.

Check the status first on the official e-visa portal. If it asks for an update, fix that item at once, because the file will not move until you do.

Frequently asked questions

Do Australians need a visa for Vietnam?

Yes. Australian passports are not visa-exempt, except for a stay limited to Phu Quoc island. Most travelers use the e-visa.

What is the latest time to apply from Sydney for a same-day e-visa?

The fastest speed accepts files until 18:00 Vietnam time, which is 21:00 in Sydney in winter and 22:00 in summer.

Which entry port should I choose if I fly through Singapore or Bangkok?

The Vietnamese airport where you land, such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi or Da Nang. Never the transit city.

My e-visa is still processing and I fly tomorrow. What now?

Do not apply again. Ask for a speed-up of the existing application before the day's cutoff.
