Phu Quoc is the only place in Vietnam where a US, Australian, Canadian or Indian passport holder can land without any visa at all. The rule is simple, but most of the problems we see come from small details: a domestic connection booked separately, a "quick" side trip to Saigon, or a stay that runs one day past 30. This guide covers exactly where the line is.

Who qualifies for the Phu Quoc 30-day visa exemption?
Everyone does, regardless of nationality, provided the conditions below are met. The rule comes from Vietnam's Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners (Law No. 47/2014/QH13). Article 12 of that law, as amended by Law No. 51/2019/QH14 (in force since July 1, 2020), exempts visas for foreigners entering a designated coastal economic zone. Phu Quoc is the zone that meets every legal condition. Since July 2025, Phu Quoc has been a special administrative zone of An Giang province, and the exemption still applies.
To use it, you need:
- ✅ A passport valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date. This is Vietnam's general entry requirement, and airlines check it at check-in.
- ✅ Arrival in Phu Quoc from abroad. That means an international flight landing at Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC), an international ship docking at Phu Quoc, or an international transit through another Vietnamese airport without entering the mainland (see the transit section below).
- ✅ A stay confined to the island for no more than 30 days.
- ✅ No entry ban. People barred from entering Vietnam cannot use the exemption.

Which itineraries qualify, and which don't?
The quick test: does your trip touch mainland Vietnam at any point? If it does, plan on a visa. The table covers the most common cases.
Your itinerary | Visa-free on Phu Quoc? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
International flight straight to Phu Quoc (e.g. from Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul), island only, leaving within 30 days | ✅ Yes | Passport valid 6+ months; onward ticket recommended |
Fly to Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi, pass immigration, then take a domestic flight to Phu Quoc | ❌ No | E-visa (or your nationality's exemption) for the whole trip |
One international ticket connecting through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi to Phu Quoc, without entering the mainland | ⚠️ Usually yes, but confirm with your airline | Through-ticket and checked bags to PQC; see the transit section |
Phu Quoc first, then a few days in Ho Chi Minh City or elsewhere | ❌ No | Get an e-visa before you travel |
Stay longer than 30 days on Phu Quoc | ❌ No | E-visa (30 or 90 days) before you travel |
Your nationality already has a 45-day exemption (e.g. UK, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea) | ➖ Not needed | Use your national exemption; it covers the mainland too |
Can I transit through Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi and still be visa-free?
In principle, yes. In practice, it depends on how your ticket is booked. Vietnam's Foreign Ministry describes the exemption as covering foreigners who come from abroad to Phu Quoc, including those who transit through an international border gate in Vietnam. The catch is that you must stay in the international transit process. You cannot enter mainland Vietnam and then board a separate domestic flight.
- Book one ticket (one booking reference) all the way to Phu Quoc, with bags checked through to PQC.
- Ask the airline before you pay whether it handles visa-free transit to Phu Quoc on that route.
- Carry printed copies of your onward ticket out of Phu Quoc and your hotel booking on the island.
- If any of this is unclear, the safest choice is a direct international flight to PQC or a standard e-visa. At USD 50 for standard processing, the e-visa costs far less than a refused boarding.
What happens if I want to visit mainland Vietnam after Phu Quoc?
You need a visa, and you should get it before you travel. The Phu Quoc exemption only covers the island. If you want to go elsewhere in Vietnam, the law requires you to obtain a visa through the immigration authority. That is far harder to arrange from the island than an e-visa applied for online at home.
Treat any trip that might touch the mainland as an e-visa trip from day one. One e-visa covers the whole country, including Phu Quoc.
If there is any chance you'll add Saigon, the Mekong Delta or Hanoi to the trip, apply for an e-visa from the start and use it to enter Phu Quoc too. One e-visa covers the whole country for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. See our guide to Vietnam multiple-entry e-visas if you plan to hop to Cambodia or Thailand and come back.
Can I extend the Phu Quoc visa exemption beyond 30 days?
No, plan for 30 days as a hard limit. Visa-free stays in Vietnam are not designed to be extended, and overstaying even one day can lead to a fine and delays at exit immigration. If you might stay longer, enter with a 90-day e-visa instead. If you are already in Vietnam and running out of time, read our Vietnam visa extension and overstay guide before your 30 days end.
Does the exemption work if I arrive by cruise ship?
Ships arriving at Phu Quoc from abroad fall under the same island rule, but cruise passengers are usually processed through the cruise line's own immigration arrangements. These differ again when the itinerary also calls at Ho Chi Minh City, Nha Trang or Ha Long. Check with your cruise line, and read Vietnam visa for cruise passengers for how multi-port itineraries work.

What no agency can honestly promise
Phu Quoc visa-free entry is decided by Vietnamese immigration at the border, and boarding is decided by your airline. No service, including ours, can "approve" it for you. What we can do is check your itinerary against the rules before you book, and point you to an e-visa when your trip needs one.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a visa for Phu Quoc?
No, if you fly or sail into Phu Quoc directly from abroad and stay only on the island for 30 days or less. This applies to every nationality. If your trip includes mainland Vietnam, you need an e-visa or your nationality's visa exemption.
Can US, Australian, Canadian or Indian citizens go to Phu Quoc without a visa?
Yes. The Phu Quoc exemption is open to all nationalities, including those that need an e-visa for the rest of Vietnam. The same conditions apply: arrive from abroad, stay on the island, and leave within 30 days.
Can I fly to Ho Chi Minh City first and then to Phu Quoc without a visa?
Not if you pass immigration in Ho Chi Minh City and take a separate domestic flight. That counts as entering mainland Vietnam, so you need a visa. A single international through-ticket that keeps you in transit is usually accepted, but confirm with your airline before booking.
How long can I stay on Phu Quoc without a visa?
Up to 30 days from your arrival date. Treat it as a hard limit: the exemption is not designed to be extended, and overstaying can lead to fines at exit.
Can I leave Phu Quoc and visit other parts of Vietnam?
Not under the exemption. To travel to the mainland you need a visa, and it is far easier to apply for an e-visa online before your trip than to arrange a visa once you are on the island.
Is the Phu Quoc visa exemption still valid in 2026?
Yes. As of November 2026, the 30-day visa-free rule for Phu Quoc remains in force under Vietnam's Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners, as amended in 2019. Proposals to extend the stay to 60 or 90 days have been discussed, but none has been adopted yet.
