Cruising to Vietnam? Why You Still Need a Visa Before the Ship Docks

Home › eVisa Guide › Vietnam Visa for Cruise Passengers

Direct Answer — Cruise Passengers Need eVisa Before Departure

Apply before the cruise departs — not onboard, not at the Vietnamese port. Vietnamese immigration does not issue visas at seaports.

US / CA / AU / IN: eVisa required from USD 90. Apply at least 5 days before departure.

UK / FR / DE / KR / JP: 45-day visa-free — no eVisa needed.

ASEAN: 30-day visa-free — no eVisa needed.

eVisa not ready before port? WhatsApp +84 947 754 252 — Boarding Letter ~30 min, 24/7.

Entry Port by Vietnamese Cruise Port

The entry port on the eVisa must match the Vietnamese seaport where the cruise ship docks — not the embarkation city (Singapore, Hong Kong, etc.). Vietnam has authorised seaports as official entry points. Use the table below to find the correct IATA code for your port of call.

Vietnamese cruise port Gateway city / attraction eVisa entry port
Phu My PortHo Chi Minh City (Saigon), Mekong DeltaSGN
Tien Sa Port (Da Nang)Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, Marble MountainsDAD
Chan May PortHue, Da Nang, Hoi AnDAD
Cai Lan Port (Quang Ninh)Ha Long Bay, HanoiHAN
Nha Trang PortNha Trang city, beaches, island toursCXR
Phu Quoc PortPhu Quoc island beachesPQC

Multiple ports of call on one cruise — use the first Vietnamese port.

If the cruise visits both Da Nang (Tien Sa) and Ho Chi Minh City (Phu My) on the same itinerary, enter DAD if Da Nang is the first Vietnamese port, or SGN if Ho Chi Minh City comes first. The eVisa is valid at all subsequent Vietnamese ports on the same trip. If unsure, contact WhatsApp +84 947 754 252 with the cruise itinerary for a free assessment.

Five Things Cruise Passengers Get Wrong

1. Applying onboard thinking ship Wi-Fi is reliable enough

Satellite internet on cruise ships is slow and drops frequently. The eVisa application requires uploading a passport scan and portrait photo, then completing payment. Onboard Wi-Fi regularly fails during file upload or payment, resulting in incomplete submissions. Apply from home or hotel before boarding.

2. Using the embarkation port as entry port

Cruises departing from Singapore (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG), or Bangkok (BKK) transit to Vietnam. The entry port must be the Vietnamese seaport — SGN for Phu My, DAD for Tien Sa or Chan May, HAN for Cai Lan. Entering SIN or HKG on the eVisa causes Amendment Required with no email.

3. Assuming the cruise line will handle visas

Cruise lines do not apply for eVisas on passengers' behalf. Some may offer visa services through a third party at a significant markup, but this is not guaranteed. The eVisa is the passenger's personal responsibility. Check the cruise line's own documentation and apply independently.

4. Applying too late and running out of processing time

Standard processing is 3–5 Vietnamese business days with no weekend processing. A cruise departing on Friday with the first Vietnam port on Monday has approximately one real processing day. Apply at least 7 days before the first Vietnam port call. Less than 5 days: use priority tiers from USD 110.

5. Not saving the PDF offline before the ship leaves port

Once the ship sails from the last pre-Vietnam port, onboard connectivity may drop. Download the eVisa PDF to device storage before boarding. Save to phone camera roll and email it to yourself. Vietnamese port immigration accepts digital PDF — no print required, but having both is safer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do cruise passengers need a visa for Vietnam?

Depends on passport. US/CA/AU/IN/IE/NL/NZ: eVisa required, apply before departure. UK/FR/DE/KR/JP: 45-day exempt. ASEAN: 30-day exempt. Apply at least 5–7 days before first Vietnam port call.

What entry port for cruise passengers?

Use the Vietnamese seaport, not the embarkation city. Phu My (HCMC): SGN. Tien Sa or Chan May (Da Nang/Hue): DAD. Cai Lan (Ha Long Bay): HAN. Nha Trang: CXR. Phu Quoc: PQC. Never SIN, HKG, or BKK.

Can I apply for Vietnam eVisa onboard the cruise?

Not reliably. Satellite Wi-Fi is too slow for reliable document upload and payment. Apply from home or hotel before boarding. If less than 3 days to port: use priority tier or Boarding Letter via WhatsApp +84 947 754 252.

My eVisa is not ready and the ship reaches Vietnam today.

WhatsApp +84 947 754 252 immediately while ship has mobile coverage near the Vietnamese coast. Boarding Letter ~30 min, 24/7. Full eVisa PDF before docking if applied in time.
