Exemptions are for entering Vietnam as a visitor. They do not cover work, long-term residence or a stay longer than the limit shown.
The 45-Day Exemptions: Two Resolutions, 24 Countries
Vietnam grants a unilateral exemption of up to 45 days from the date of entry to citizens of 24 countries, under two government resolutions. The exemption applies whatever the passport type, as long as you meet Vietnam’s general entry conditions.

A visa-free stay cannot be extended. If you want to stay longer than 45 days, apply for the e-visa, valid for up to 90 days.
Shorter Exemptions: ASEAN Neighbors and Others
Some neighbors have bilateral arrangements with shorter limits. These are the figures most sources agree on:

Not Exempt: These Passports Need an E-Visa
Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India and China are not on the exemption lists. They need a visa for any trip length and any purpose. Most travelers use the e-visa, applied for online before flying.
The Phu Quoc Exception
Phu Quoc has its own rule. Foreign visitors can enter, stay in and leave Phu Quoc for up to 30 days without a visa, whatever their nationality, if they meet the entry conditions.
Conditions can change. Confirm the current Phu Quoc rules with the Vietnamese embassy or the island’s immigration office before you book.

If You Need the E-Visa
The Vietnam e-visa is valid for up to 90 days, single or multiple entry. Choose 90 days: it costs the same as 30. Multiple entry adds USD 25 and has to be chosen when you apply. Prices below include the USD 25 government fee for a new application, in US dollars.
