Mistake 1 — eVisa Still In Process at Check-In

The traveler shows the application confirmation email showing "In Process." The airline refuses check-in. In Process status is not a valid eVisa — it is an application in a government queue.
Why it happens: Standard processing is 3 to 5 Vietnamese business days — excluding weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. Travelers who apply 2 to 3 days before a Friday departure and then have a weekend do not allow enough time. Processing also resets to Day 1 if an error is found — a fact many applicants are unaware of because no email is sent.
Prevention: Apply at least 10 Vietnamese business days before departure. Check the live status at evisa.gov.vn/e-visa/search — not the confirmation email — 3 days before the flight. The confirmation email shows submission status, not current status.

The eVisa is technically approved but invalid for the actual trip. Airlines check the entry port against the booking destination. When they see a mismatch, boarding is denied. Vietnamese immigration on arrival would also catch this.
Why it happens: Most US-to-Vietnam routes involve a long transit through Singapore or Seoul. Applicants mentally associate these cities with the journey and enter the transit hub code. The evisa.gov.vn system accepts SIN or ICN as entries without flagging them as invalid — they are legitimate IATA codes, just not Vietnamese ports. Mistake 3 — Name Mismatch: Middle Name Missing
What happens: The name on the eVisa does not match the name in the passport MRZ (machine-readable zone — the two lines of characters at the bottom of the passport photo page). Mistake 4 — Wrong Entry Date: The International Date Line Problem
What happens: The entry date on the eVisa does not match the actual Vietnam arrival date. The eVisa is approved, but the date shown is one or two days earlier than when the plane actually lands. Vietnamese immigration checks the entry date — presenting a passport before the valid entry date results in denial of entry, even with an approved eVisa.
Why it happens: Every US-to-Vietnam route crosses the International Date Line. A traveler departing Los Angeles Friday evening at 23:30 PT lands in Ho Chi Minh City Sunday morning Vietnam time — not Saturday, and not Friday. The eVisa entry date must be Sunday. Applicants who enter the US departure date (Friday) or make a one-day miscalculation (Saturday) have an eVisa that is valid starting the wrong day.
Prevention: Find the Vietnam-landing flight segment in the booking confirmation. Look at the "Arrives" line — it will show the date and time in local Vietnam time. That date is the entry date for the eVisa. It is typically 1 to 2 calendar days after the US departure date depending on routing.

Mistake 5 — Passport Expires Within 6 Months of Arrival
