Vietnam Visa Extension for US Citizens 2026: Can You Extend, Visa Run Options, ET Cutoffs

Direct answer

The Vietnam eVisa cannot be extended from inside Vietnam for US citizens. No in-country extension exists for any eVisa category in 2026. To stay longer: exit Vietnam and apply for a new eVisa online before re-entering.

Fastest visa run options from HCMC or Hanoi: Bangkok (~2h) • Singapore (~2h) • Phnom Penh (~1h). Apply new eVisa while still in Vietnam. Entry date = re-entry date into Vietnam, not US departure date.

Overstaying 16+ days = deportation risk (Decree 59/2026). New eVisa: USD 90 standard — apply now with future entry date

VietnamVisaEasy • Updated August 5, 2026 • Processing experience since 2010. Applies to all US passport holders regardless of visa category (tourism, business, family visit). Decree 59/2026 overstay enforcement effective April 1, 2026.

Why the Vietnam eVisa Cannot Be Extended for US Citizens

The Vietnam eVisa is a fixed-validity electronic entry permit. Unlike some embassy-issued visas in other countries, the eVisa has no in-country renewal or extension procedure. This applies to all nationalities including US passport holders — regardless of whether the eVisa was for 30 days or 90 days, tourism or business.

Common misconception on some websites: "You can extend your Vietnam visa from inside the country"

This was partially true for older embassy-issued visa types. It is not true for the Vietnam eVisa in 2026. The eVisa cannot be extended at an immigration office in Hanoi, HCMC, or Da Nang. The only legal options are: exit and apply a new eVisa, convert to a sponsored visa (requires Vietnamese employer), or apply for a Temporary Residence Card (requires full sponsorship and weeks of processing).

Three Legal Options for US Citizens Who Want to Stay Longer

1

Visa Run — Exit and Apply New eVisa

Most practical for US tourists. Works from any city in Vietnam.

Exit Vietnam before the current eVisa expires, apply for a new 90-day eVisa online, and re-enter once approved. US citizens are visa-exempt in Thailand (30 days) and Singapore (90 days) — no additional visa cost needed for the transit stay.

Destination From HCMC From Hanoi US entry Typical stay cost
Bangkok ~2h flight ~2h flight Visa-exempt 30 days USD 150–300 flight + 1–3 nights
Singapore ~2h flight ~2.5h flight Visa-exempt 90 days USD 200–400 flight + accommodation
Phnom Penh ~1h flight or bus ~2h flight Cambodia eVisa USD 30 USD 80–150 flight + 1 night
Kuala Lumpur ~1.5h flight ~2.5h flight Visa-exempt 90 days USD 100–200 flight + accommodation

Apply new Vietnam eVisa before leaving Vietnam

Submit via VietnamVisaEasy or evisa.gov.vn from your hotel in Vietnam. Set entry date = planned Vietnam re-entry date. New eVisa activates on that date — does not affect current stay.

2

Convert to Work or Business Visa

Only if sponsored by a Vietnamese company. Must be arranged before current eVisa expires.

If employed by or formally partnered with a Vietnamese company, the company can file for a work visa (LD), business visa (DN), or investment visa (DT) conversion from inside Vietnam. This must be initiated and completed before the current eVisa expires. The company — not the individual — handles the paperwork with Vietnamese immigration offices.

Who this applies toUS employees of Vietnamese companies, US investors with registered Vietnamese business, NGO workers with Vietnamese organizational sponsor
Not available forTourists, remote workers, digital nomads, freelancers without Vietnamese company sponsorship. Visa run is the only option for these travelers.
3

Temporary Residence Card

Long-term solution. 4–8 weeks processing. Requires full Vietnamese sponsorship.

Valid 1–2 years, renewable. Requires Vietnamese employer, spouse of Vietnamese citizen, or institutional sponsor. Must be applied for while holding a valid visa — cannot be applied after eVisa expires. Recommend engaging a local Vietnamese immigration attorney if pursuing this route.

Overstay Penalties for US Citizens in 2026

Overstay duration Fine Additional consequences
1–5 daysUSD 25–150Written warning, immigration record mark
6–15 daysUSD 150–300Immigration record, possible future visa difficulty
16+ daysUSD 300–500Deportation risk under Decree 59/2026. Multi-year re-entry ban possible.

The expiry date on the eVisa PDF is the last permitted day in Vietnam. Departure on or before that date required. Begin visa run planning at least 7–10 days before expiry. Note for US citizens: the US Embassy in Vietnam does not intervene in immigration overstay matters — fines and consequences are enforced regardless of citizenship.

How to Apply New eVisa From Vietnam for Visa Run Re-entry

The new eVisa application can be submitted from anywhere including from inside Vietnam. The entry date on the new eVisa must be the planned re-entry date back into Vietnam — not the date leaving Vietnam. Two critical US-specific notes:

US-specific error 1: Entry date confusion

The entry date on the new eVisa is the Vietnam re-entry date — not the departure date from Vietnam, not the US time zone date. Example: leaving Vietnam August 20 (Vietnam time) for Bangkok, re-entering Vietnam August 22 (Vietnam time). New eVisa entry date = 22/08/2026. Do not enter Vietnam before August 22 — the eVisa is invalid before its entry date.

US-specific error 2: Entry port on new eVisa

If re-entering Vietnam via a connecting flight through ICN (Seoul) or NRT (Tokyo) after the visa run, the entry port on the new eVisa must still be the Vietnamese airport — SGN, HAN, or DAD. Never ICN or NRT. This is the most common error on US re-entry eVisas and triggers Amendment Required immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Can US citizens extend their Vietnam visa?
No. The Vietnam eVisa cannot be extended from inside Vietnam for any nationality including US citizens. Exit Vietnam before expiry and apply a new eVisa online. Apply while still in Vietnam with the re-entry date as the entry date.
What is the easiest visa run for Americans in Vietnam?
Bangkok (~2h from HCMC or Hanoi, US visa-exempt 30 days). Singapore (~2h, US visa-exempt 90 days). Phnom Penh (~1h from HCMC, Cambodia eVisa USD 30). Apply new Vietnam eVisa before departing Vietnam so it is approved and ready for re-entry.
What entry date do I put on the new Vietnam eVisa for a visa run?
The planned re-entry date into Vietnam in DD/MM/YYYY. Not the date leaving Vietnam. Not the US ET/PT date. Example: leaving Vietnam August 20, arriving Bangkok August 20 VNT, returning Vietnam August 22 VNT → entry date on new eVisa: 22/08/2026.
What happens if a US citizen overstays their Vietnam visa?
Fines USD 25–500. 16+ days overstay = deportation risk under Decree 59/2026 + potential multi-year re-entry ban. The US Embassy in Vietnam does not intervene in overstay matters. Exit before the expiry date on the eVisa PDF.
What is the ET cutoff for applying a new Vietnam eVisa for visa run re-entry?
1-Hour: 07:00 ET (06:00 CT / 05:00 MT / 04:00 PT). 1-Day/3-Day: midnight ET (prev night). 5-Hour: 02:00 ET. 2.5-Hour: 04:00 ET. These cutoffs apply when applying from Vietnam or Bangkok — Vietnam Time (VNT) is the processing clock regardless of where you submit.
What entry port do I use on the new eVisa if returning via Seoul or Tokyo?
Always the Vietnamese airport where the plane lands — SGN (HCMC), HAN (Hanoi), or DAD (Da Nang). Never ICN (Seoul), NRT (Tokyo), BKK, or SIN. This error is the most common on re-entry eVisas and triggers silent Amendment Required with no email notification.
