Quick Answer
The most common Vietnam eVisa problems for Australians are Amendment Required (usually caused by an iPhone HEIC photo, a name mismatch, or entering SYD instead of SGN), a stalled "still processing" status, and last-minute emergencies with no visa in hand.
Do not reapply if you already have a reference code — reapplying creates a 24–48 hour hold on both applications. The correct path is to Speed Up or correct the existing application. If you have not applied yet, a New Application (with the USD 25 govt fee included) is available from 3-Day Rush to Emergency (30–60 min) on weekdays.
Australian passport holders are eligible for the Vietnam eVisa but are not visa-exempt — you must apply before travel. The online government portal at evisa.gov.vn handles millions of applications and has a handful of specific failure modes that catch Australians repeatedly. This guide walks through each problem, explains why it happens, and shows the fastest way to resolve it from Australia's timezone.
Verify your current application status at any time at evisa.gov.vn/e-visa/search using your reference code (format: E260705...).
Problem 1 — Amendment Required
An "Amendment Required" status means the Vietnam Immigration Department has reviewed your application and found an error that prevents approval. The status does not mean your visa is denied — it means you must fix the specific field before processing can continue.
The four causes that account for the vast majority of Australian Amendment Required cases:
| Cause | What Happened | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| HEIC photo from iPhone | iPhone default format (HEIC) is rejected. Portal requires JPEG. | Convert to JPEG and resubmit via Speed Up |
| Name mismatch | Name entered does not match passport exactly — middle name omitted, hyphen dropped, or spelling differs. | Correct to match passport verbatim via Speed Up |
| Wrong entry port | Entered SYD, MEL, or BNE — these are Australian airports, not Vietnamese. Port must be inside Vietnam. | Change to SGN / HAN / DAD / PQC / CXR via Speed Up |
| Date format error | Entered MM/DD (US style) instead of DD/MM. Entry date is your Vietnam arrival date, not your departure date from Australia. | Correct date format and confirm correct date via Speed Up |
What not to do: Do not submit a new application while your Amendment Required application is still open. The government system will flag the duplicate and place a 24–48 hour hold on both. Always correct the existing application.
Error checking is free. Send us your reference code, registration email, and the entry date on your application and we will identify which field triggered the amendment status. Correction via Speed Up is a paid service.
Problem 2 — Still Processing / Stalled
Standard government processing takes 3 business days. If your application has been sitting without an update past that window, it is likely stalled. The two most common reasons are a hidden Amendment Required flag (not always visible in your dashboard) and general queue backlogs during peak periods.
Government office hours in Vietnam are Monday to Friday, 8:00–11:30 and 13:30–18:00 Vietnam time. No processing occurs on weekends or public holidays. From Australia (AEST, UTC+10), the Monday–Friday working window roughly corresponds to 11:00–14:30 AEST and 16:30–21:00 AEST — with the afternoon session being the most productive.
What to do if your application is stalled:
- Check the status at evisa.gov.vn/e-visa/search — if it shows Amendment Required rather than Processing, go to Problem 1 above.
- Do not reapply — this freezes both applications for 24–48 hours.
- If your travel is within 3 days, activate a Speed Up immediately. The sooner you escalate, the more tier options remain available.
- Have ready: your reference code (E260705...), the email used to register, and your flight number to Vietnam.
A Boarding Letter can be issued during the Vietnam government lunch break (12:00–13:30 VNT) when an eVisa cannot complete in time. This bridges the gap so you can board — the eVisa is confirmed after 13:30 VNT.
Problem 3 — Wrong Entry Port (SYD / MEL / BNE)
The entry port field on the Vietnam eVisa application asks for the Vietnam airport where you will arrive — not where you depart from in Australia. Australians routinely enter SYD (Sydney), MEL (Melbourne), or BNE (Brisbane) by mistake. This always triggers an Amendment Required.
Valid Vietnam entry ports for the eVisa:
| Code | Airport | City |
|---|---|---|
| SGN | Tan Son Nhat International | Ho Chi Minh City |
| HAN | Noi Bai International | Hanoi |
| DAD | Da Nang International | Da Nang |
| PQC | Phu Quoc International | Phu Quoc Island |
| CXR | Cam Ranh International | Nha Trang |
If you connect through Singapore (SIN), Seoul (ICN), Tokyo (NRT), or Dubai (DXB), those are transit hubs — your entry port is still the Vietnam airport where you land, not your stopover.
Note for SGN arrivals: From 15 April 2026, Tan Son Nhat International Airport requires a pre-arrival declaration at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn. Complete this separately after your eVisa is approved.
A wrong entry port does not require a new application. Contact us with your reference code and we will correct it via Speed Up.
Problem 4 — Flight Tomorrow / Urgent, No Visa Yet
Whether you have already applied and are waiting, or have not applied at all, urgent options are available on Monday–Friday during Vietnam government hours. The service you need depends on whether a reference code exists.
If you already applied (have a reference code):
Use Speed Up. Do not apply again. Contact us immediately with your reference code, registration email, and flight number. The fastest available tier on Mon–Fri before cutoff is 1.5-Hour at USD 160 (escalation fee only — does not include the USD 25 govt fee, which you already paid).
If you have not applied yet:
Use a New Application. The USD 25 government fee is included in all New Application prices. The fastest available tier is Emergency (30–60 min) at USD 215, available Mon–Fri only. Contact us immediately to confirm availability for your travel date.
Australia timezone cutoffs (weekday services):
| Service | AEST Cutoff (UTC+10) | AEDT Cutoff (UTC+11) |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5-Hour / 2.5-Hour | 19:30 AEST | 20:30 AEDT |
| 5-Hour / 1-Day / 2-Day / 3-Day | 16:30 AEST | 17:30 AEDT (earlier in day) |
| Weekend (Sat/Sun) | 18:00 AEST | 19:00 AEDT |
Problem 5 — Denied Boarding / No Visa at the Airport
Airline check-in staff are required to verify that passengers have a valid Vietnam visa before boarding. If you arrive at the airport without an approved eVisa, or with an eVisa that shows Amendment Required, you will be denied boarding.
If you are still at the airport with a later flight option:
- Contact us via WhatsApp immediately — this is a time-critical situation.
- On Mon–Fri, an Emergency Speed Up (if you have a reference code) or Emergency New Application (30–60 min, USD 215) may be possible before the government office closes.
- On weekends, government processing takes longer. The Weekend tier (USD 210 Speed Up / USD 230 New Application) covers Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays.
- Rebook your flight to allow processing time — do not take a flight to a transit hub hoping to resolve it en route.
Visa on Arrival is not available as a tourist option for Australians. There is no counter at the airport where you can obtain a visa upon arrival without prior approval. The eVisa must be approved before you board.
Pricing — Speed Up (Already Applied)
Speed Up applies to existing applications with a reference code. These are escalation fees only — the USD 25 government fee was paid when you applied and is not charged again.

| Weekend / Holiday | USD 210 | Sat / Sun / Public Holidays | 18:00 AEST / 19:00 AEDT |
| Emergency Speed Up | USD 190 | Mon–Fri ONLY | Contact us to confirm |

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Vietnam eVisa say Amendment Required?
The most common causes for Australian applicants are: uploading a HEIC photo from an iPhone instead of a JPEG, a name that does not match the passport exactly, entering an Australian airport code (SYD, MEL, BNE) in the entry port field instead of a Vietnam airport code (SGN, HAN, DAD, PQC, CXR), and using MM/DD date format instead of DD/MM. Do not reapply — contact us with your reference code and we will identify and fix the field.
My Vietnam eVisa is still processing after 3 days. What should I do?
A stalled application often has a hidden Amendment Required flag not visible on your dashboard, or is caught in a queue backlog. Do not reapply — a duplicate triggers a 24–48 hour hold on both applications. Contact us with your reference code (format E260705...), registration email, and flight number to activate a Speed Up.
I entered Sydney (SYD) as my entry port. Do I need to reapply?
No — do not reapply. The entry port must be a Vietnam airport: SGN, HAN, DAD, PQC, or CXR. We can correct this via Speed Up on your existing application without you starting over.
Do Australian passport holders need a Vietnam eVisa?
Yes. Australian passport holders are eVisa eligible but not visa-exempt — you must apply before travel. The eVisa is valid for 30 or 90 days depending on what you selected at application, and covers single or multiple entries.
My flight to Vietnam is tomorrow. Can I still get a visa?
Yes, on Mon–Fri during government office hours. A 1.5-Hour Speed Up (USD 160 if you already applied) or 1.5-Hour New Application (USD 185 if you have not applied) is available up to 19:30 AEST / 20:30 AEDT. An Emergency tier (30–60 min) is also available on weekdays. Contact us immediately with your flight details.
Can I get a Vietnam visa on arrival as an Australian?
No. Visa on Arrival is not a current tourist option for Australians. The eVisa must be approved before you board. There is no counter at Vietnam airports where an Australian can obtain a visa upon arrival without prior approval.
My iPhone photo was rejected. Why?
iPhones save photos in HEIC format by default, which the Vietnam government portal rejects. You must convert the image to JPEG before uploading. In iPhone Settings, go to Camera — Formats — Most Compatible to switch future photos to JPEG, or use an online HEIC-to-JPEG converter for existing shots.
I was denied boarding at the airport. Is there anything I can do?
If you are still at the airport with a later flight option, contact us via WhatsApp immediately. An Emergency Speed Up or Emergency New Application (30–60 min, Mon–Fri only) may resolve the situation before the Vietnam government office closes for the day. On weekends, a standard Weekend tier applies.
What is the difference between Speed Up and a New Application?
Speed Up is for people who already have a reference code — we escalate the existing application. A New Application is for people who have not applied at all — the USD 25 government fee is included in the price. Never submit a second application if you already have one in the system.
Do children travelling with me need their own Vietnam visa?
Yes. Every traveller including infants needs a separate Vietnam eVisa application. Attempting to include a child on a parent's application risks invalidating the entire family's visas.
