A few days of “pending” is normal. A week or more is the point where people start to worry, and where two quiet rules, one about where you apply from and one about your passport, catch travelers out. This page explains what a long wait normally looks like, how to read it, and how to avoid both traps.
Quick answer:
- The official estimate is around 3 working days. A wait of 6 to 7 working days is worth checking, and 8 or more is worth escalating
- Rule 1: apply from outside Vietnam. An application made from inside the country is commonly rejected or left unprocessed until your exit is recorded
- Rule 2: your passport needs 6 months from your arrival date. This already covers the reported 30-day margin for a 90-day e-visa
- Check the live status, never the email. Do not reapply, because a duplicate can hold both files

What a Long Wait Normally Looks Like
The official estimate is around 3 working days. In practice that is closer to the floor than the ceiling: files with a correction request, or caught in a holiday backlog, can take noticeably longer. Some applicants report waits of a couple of weeks. We cannot point to an official maximum, so treat any figure, ours included, as a rule of thumb.

Rule 1: Apply From Outside Vietnam
The e-visa system expects an application to be submitted from outside Vietnam. An application made while you are physically inside the country is commonly rejected, or left unprocessed until your exit is recorded. Sources describe it both ways, which is itself a reason not to rely on it working.
It catches three kinds of traveler: people on a visa run, people extending a long trip who apply for the next leg from a hotel in Vietnam, and anyone who applies from inside the country for a future entry. The date of the trip does not matter; the place you are when you press submit does.
What to do
- Leave first, then apply. Cross the border, apply from the other side, and wait for the approval before you cross back.
- If you applied from inside Vietnam and the file is pending, it may simply be waiting for your exit. Do not reapply. Leave, and ask support to look at the file once you are out.
- Plan the wait. A visa run needs time on the other side, which is where a faster tier earns its price.
Rule 2: The Passport Needs Six Months From Your Arrival
Vietnam requires your passport to be valid for at least 6 months from the day you arrive, with blank pages, and airlines check it at check-in. This is the rule to plan around.
You may also read that an e-visa must expire at least 30 days before your passport does. That legal rule is reported, but it does not add anything for e-visa travelers, because an e-visa lasts at most 90 days and the 6-month rule already covers it. Counting 90 days plus 30 gives 120 days, which is less than 6 months. So a passport that meets the 6-month rule will also meet the 30-day one.
Example: arriving on 15 Jan 2027, a 90-day e-visa ends on about 15 Apr 2027. Adding the 30-day margin gives 15 May 2027. The 6-month rule needs the passport valid until 15 Jul 2027, which is later than both.

If your passport is close to the limit, renew it before you apply. A renewed passport has a new number, so the e-visa has to be applied for again with the new details.

What to Actually Do
- Check the live status at evisa.gov.vn/e-visa/search with the registration code, the email and your date of birth. The confirmation email is not the status.
- Look for an amendment request. A message about an issue may not arrive by email, so the status page is the reliable source.
- Past 8 working days with no explanation? The official portal has its own support contact, and you can also ask us to look at the file. Use both if you need an answer.
- Flight approaching? Ask for a speed-up of the same file instead of waiting. Do not submit a duplicate.

What Not to Do
- Book non-refundable hotels or tours before the approval is confirmed.
- Submit a second application on top of a pending one. A duplicate can hold both files and means paying the government fee twice.
- Assume that no email means no problem. The status page can show an issue that no email mentioned.
- Apply from inside Vietnam and then wait, hoping it will go through.
